Stretching is not one-size-fits-all

Some dancers feel stiff and want more mobility.
Others are naturally very flexible and need to develop strength and control.
Sometimes a particular area simply does not feel right.

Rather than using the same stretch for everyone, this workshop looks at how you can adjust your approach according to what your body actually needs.
We will explore dynamic stretching, active and passive flexibility, joint mobility, muscular engagement and the relationship between mobility and stability.
What we will work on

-
dynamic stretching sequences
-
active and passive stretching
-
joint mobilisation
-
spinal movement through different ranges
-
muscular engagement and release
-
breath and movement
-
grounding and stability
-
adapting exercises for stiffness or hypermobility
-
time for individual questions

The sequences are designed to be useful for dancers, but the principles are relevant beyond dance too.
Why dynamic stretching?
Flexibility is not simply about making a muscle longer.
How you move into a range, how much control you have there, how your joints move and how your muscles respond all affect the way you experience flexibility.
We will therefore work with movement rather than simply holding stretches. The aim is not to force your body into a particular shape. It is to develop a better understanding of how you can work with your own range of movement.
My approach
The workshop draws on my background in classical ballet, Pilates, yoga, functional anatomy and the Gyrotonic® system, as well as my work with adult dancers.
I am particularly interested in the relationship between flexibility, strength and the nervous system, and in helping dancers understand what they are actually feeling when they stretch.
There will also be plenty of opportunity to ask questions about your own body and your training.
Who is it for?
The workshop is suitable for dancers of all levels.
You do not need to be naturally flexible. You also do not need to be trying to become Instagram-flexible.
If you are interested in understanding your mobility and learning different ways of working with your body, you are welcome.
